WHITBY – The Ontario’s Special Investigating Unit has been called in to investigate an accident on Highway 401 in Whitby that left one person dead.

OPP say that a Durham Region Police officer was attempting to pull over a motorcyclist on the westbound lanes of the busy highway near Brock St. on Friday around 11:00pm. At some point the rider sped away and the passenger fell off the motorcycle and was struck by at least one vehicle.

Neither the motorcycle or the vehicle(s) that ran over the person remained on scene.

The passenger was pronounced dead on scene and the stretch of road from Brock St. to Salem Rd. was closed.
