PORT LANDS – A man has been shot and killed by police early this morning on Commissioners St. near Cherry St.

It appears that a Nissan Sentra was being pursued by 55 Division officers at around 1:00am after the vehicle was seen driving with no headlights in the Leslie St. and Lakeshore Blvd. area. The chase prompted the driver to run red lights and officers were quick to call it off.

Some time later, the car was spotted on Commissioners St. and when police approached the driver attempted to run the officers over.  One of those officers was struck by the vehicle. That’s when action was taken and the man was shot and killed.

The incident is now being investigated by the province’s Special Investigative Unit (SIU).

At least one police officer was taken to hospital with minor injuries.
