Peel Police Officer Has Succumbed To InjuriesMarch 2nd, 2010 11:50am
BRAMPTON – A Peel Police officer has succumbed to his injuries after a dramatic crash in Brampton.
Peel Region Police have identified the officer as 37-year-old Constable Artem “James” Otchakovski. He is survived by his wife and 3-year-old son.
The officer collided with another vehicle and then smashed sideways into a pole. It happened at the intersection of Airport Rd. and Steeles Ave. at around 11:00pm Monday evening.
Emergency crews arrived on the scene to find the officer, who’s been with the force two years, unconscious and trapped in the cruiser. After extricating the officer from the vehicle, they rushed him to Brampton Civic Hospital where they worked frantically to stabilize him.
Two hours after the collision the officer was rushed by ambulance to Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre.
According to Peel Police, the officer had suffered extensive head trauma.
Peel Region Police has not had an officer die while on duty since November 1982.
This tragic death now brings the total number of Peel Region officers killed to five, four of which died in vehicle accidents.
